Biowax                                                                   Bioester Division

Biowax results from the transesterification of saturated fats.  Because we use waste vegetable oil (WVO) as a feedstock, there are usually some saturated fats present, so biowax is produced along with the biodiesel.  Biowax is somewhat soluble in biodiesel, however its presence causes an increase in the cloudpoint and gelpoint of the fuel.

Implications for Biodiesel:

Crystaline biowax suspended in biodiesel is a problem for cold-weather performance.  We have implemented cold-filtering and use cold-weather anti-gel additives to combat the gelling action of biowax.  (Learn more about biodiesel gel points and cloud points)

As a product:

Currently, all of our biowax is produced along with the biodiesel.  The only difference between biowax and biodiesel is the melting point.  However, the goal of our factory is to create a zero-waste biodiesel manufacturing plant, so we are investigating uses for biowaxes.  Once we identify potential biowax products, we may begin direct synthesis of biowaxes from waste animal fat.
